castagneto carducci
castagneto carducci
In the heart of the Costa degli Etruschi, situated on top of a hill dominating the surrounding countryside and the sea, is Castagneto Carducci, an enchanting medieval village clustered around Della Gherardesca Castle, which dates from around the year 1000.

The village is full of stone-paved alleys, natural terraces with views of the sea and countryside, harmonious squares, old craft shops and typical restaurants.

Some interesting historical sites are the Praetorian Palace, now the Town Hall, the Church of St Lorenzo and the Church of the Holy Cross, with its wooden crucifix dating from the fifteenth century.

The town, which was originally called Castagneto Marittimo, changed its name in the early nineteen hundreds in honour of the great poet, Giosuč Carducci who lived there for part of his life. The house where he lived is now the site of the Centro Casa Carducci, containing memorabilia and period furniture.

The Giosuč Carducci Museum is situated in the Town Hall. Numerous events take place in the town, such as the Castagneto a tavola food fair, the Caleidoscopio international music festival, and the Costa degli Etruschi Gran Premio, an international professional cycling race. Halfway between Castagneto and its Marina is Donoratico, a lively seaside resort with a wealth of crafts and shops and a centre for competition and leisure boat building.
