Montenero stands on
a hilltop a few kilometres
outside Livorno, with a
magnificent view over the
town and sea below.
This historic village is a
well-known religious centre
and place of pilgrimage to
the Sanctuary dedicated to
Our Lady of Grace, patron
saint of Tuscany.
The Sanctuary has been
transformed over the
centuries from a small
oratory in the Middle Ages
to a Renaissance church
and finally to the great
basilica consecrated in
1818. The church
contains altars from the
mid-seventeenth tied to
the old trade guilds
of Livorno, frescoes and
beautiful paintings by
Filippo Maria Galletti. The
eighteenth century Chapel
of the Virgin houses a
tabernacle with a sacred
image of the Madonna
di Montenero, a fourteenth
century painting from the
Pisan school.
The Sanctuary leads to a
fascinating gallery of votive
offerings, the oldest dating
back to the nineteenth
century, including a large
collection of paintings with
a mainly maritime theme,
offered by the faithful as
thanks for favours
received.
Also worth a visit is the
Civic Memorial Chapel
which houses the tombs
and mementos of
illustrious Livorno citizens
of the past.
